Development of Greenhouse Systems for Moon and Mars Full Time

Your tasks will be:

• Coordination of all technical activities related to the design, development and manufacture of space related greenhouse systems
  focus on system developments within the subject area of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) technologies for various projects (EDEN-LUNA, BIOLOOPS; EDEN Next Gen., MEPA)
• Development of various technical system solutions in the field of CEA technologies: Here especially plant lighting systems (e.g. LEDs), nutrient delivery systems (e.g. nutrient mixing computers, aeroponic irrigation infrastructures) and atmosphere management systems (e.g. air conditioning, climate control including water recovery).
• Execution of trade-offs within the core technologies listed above
  analysis of research results and lessons learned from past projects in order to integrate them into future space applications
• Development and formulation of system requirements (requirements engineering) taking into account the respective greenhouse systems
• System documentation definition and organization; Interface management, including coordination of all research laboratory internal and external participants
• Support in coordinating the technical feasibility with all subsystems in the overall system, ensuring the provision of information/ documentation for all participating partners or subsystems, clarifying the external interfaces
  management of technical budgets (mass, power) and margins
• Support for the general system integrations: coordination and integration of the external (e.g. electricians, subsystem manufacturers) and internal (rack assembly, pipe laying) subsystems/works
• Implementation of defined system tests of the CEA technologies, e.g. nutrient system, light system or atmosphere management
• Independent selection of the methods and tools to be used which are relevant for the processing of the research tasks.
• Active support of operations (laboratory support, organization of test campaigns, staff coordination)
• Adherence to the specified budget framework for the work area
• Supervision and guidance of interns, students and student interns

Your qualifications:

• Completed scientific university studies in the field of horticultural engineering. Alternatively, other relevant courses such as aerospace engineering can also be considered, provided that practical research activities can be proven, preferably in the field of bio-regenerative life support systems, greenhouse technology.
• Practical research and development experience (at least 2-3 years) in the field of bio-regenerative life support systems (preferably artificial cultivation of plants), e.g. acquired through a doctorate or through other proven research activities
• Extensive experience in the conception, design and construction of Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) technologies, indoor farming applications or vertical farming (e.g. nutrient mixing systems, water recovery systems, LED lighting systems)
• In-depth specialist knowledge in the field of climate management/regulation in greenhouse cultivation, air management systems for greenhouse systems
• Well-founded experience in setting up scientific experiments and general laboratory management
• Very good knowledge of spoken and written English
